The intellectual work of Elaine Scarry around trauma and silence, specifically in The Body in Pain, has helped me to think through how to approach resistance and refusal as I conceive of performance pieces – both my own and that of viewers. Resistance to growth. A muteness when I am free to speak: “..reversion to a state anterior to language, to the sounds and cries a human being makes before language is learned.”
