KNÄCKEBRÖD (CRISP BREAD)

The work of UK performance artist Bobby Baker including Drawing on a Mother’s Experience (1988) and Pull Yourselves Together (2000) has influenced how I approach revelations of intimacy in my performance work. My approach to making work mirrors that of Helge Meyer. Like Meyer, who was born in a small German village 35 miles south of Celle where I was born, self-injury has been a part of my experiments in performance. By hurting myself, by putting my body at risk of injury during the course of performing, I make my audience my witness.

Thomas Young Gallery (2017)

I repeatedly step out in front of people and claim space and time for myself. I put my own body in front instead of laboring over a drawing or painting and bringing that out instead. I am frightened. But each time, I feel that it is worth it, for what it does to me. I become, became, someone. I was no-one’s daughter/girlfriend/mother. Throughout my performances, I struggle to find my own voice.
